Malcolm Jolley checks back in with Celia Méndedz Díaz to talk about virtual tastings with Nicholas Pearce Wines and what’s happening at Viñátigo, her family’s winery in the Canary Islands…
I spoke to Celia Méndez Díaz last November for this GFR post when she led me through a tasting of, and an interview on, wines from her family’s winery on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Bodegas Viñátigo. In Ontario, Viñátigo is represented by the Nicholas Pearce Wines agency*, where Celia works as a project manager, working on things like their ongoing ‘Virtual Portfolio Tasting’ series of winemaker videos, and an upcoming virtual tasting with Leaning Post winery in Niagara. When we spoke in November, Celia was also working on bringing a group of Toronto sommeliers to Tenerife in March. I wondered if she made it, since Tenerife was a hotspot for the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in Europe, and how her family were doing during the crisis. In the Zoom interview below we talk about this and about how the wine trade has changed in these times.
