Cloudsley Cellars presents spring sipping from Niagara’s Twenty Mile Bench…
Since we can’t host you at Cloudsley Cellars right now with the current lockdown in Ontario, we thought we’d being a bit of our wine tour to you.
It starts with the map of the Twenty Mile Bench on our cellar door. The Bench is a sub-appellation that stretches from Fifteen Mile Creek to west of Cherry Avenue in Vineland, Niagara. Bisected by Twenty Mile Creek, it has a complex topography with a distinctive double bench formation west of the creek, and short, varied slopes that roll to the brow of the escarpment.
The sheltered north-facing slopes and the air circulation from Lake Ontario provide for year round temperature moderation to create an ideal growing season for quality grapes. Lake breezes pushing up against the Escarpment circulate the warm air and extend warm daytime temperatures into the evening, encouraging an even and continuous ripening process. The soils, laid down by passing glaciers, are deep clay and till with a high proportion of limestone and shale and quite a bit of variation in texture.
Our Twenty Mile Bench wines are crafted through a careful barrel selection process, which allows us to make the best possible blends from each separate vineyard lot. The end result is beautifully balanced wine, elegant and classic and displaying the best characteristics from the selected sites within the Twenty Mile Bench appellation.
