Working organically, using native yeast fermentation, and limited sulphur, Roberto draws upon Rioja’s long established protocol of barrel aging (working mainly with French oak), to craft deeply personal wines of substance and character. He is deeply attached to Viñaspre, a hamlet in the district of the wine region of Lanciego on the foothills at the eastern end of the Sierra Cantabria Mountains at an altitude of over 600m above sea level.
Tentenublo, despite its relatively small size, can be described as a collection of several distinct microclimates with 15-70 year old vines spread throughout 22 individual parcels in the foothills of the Cantabria mountains, at altitudes ranging from 450-650 meters. The estate is planted mainly to classic red and white Rioja varieties including Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura.
These wines have been receiving the attention of critics around the world – a worthy investment for any wine enthusiast and connoisseur.
“Made with fruit sourced from three separate, marl-based vineyard sites in the foothills of the Cantabria Mountains, Tempranillo is blended with the white grape Viura in a manner customary to the Tentenublo estate. Opening notes of Eucalyptus, tropical fruit and black currant lead to kelp, smoke, tamari and a hint of animal fur. A tremendous value.” – Sydney Snyder
Tentenublo Red 2017…. $29.95 (12pk)
Roberto calls this “the free wine from the hamlet of Viñaspre.” Ripe, red fruit with a hint of liquorice over a toasty background. This is a flavorful, honest wine offering a pure expression of the vintage. A terroir-driven Rioja.
Escondite del Ardacho Veriquette 2017…. $63.95 (6pk)
“Wonderful aromas of ripe blackberries warmed by the sun along with more ‘sauvage’ notes of crushed stems and pith on the palate. Like the Veriquete, but possibly more so, this has immense complexity for such a young wine and shows great promise for the future – wine that engages the mind as well as the senses. Drink now – 2030.” – Lea & Sandeman
Los Corrillos White 2017…. $67.95 (6pk)
“Made with Malvasia Riojana, Jaén Blanca & Viura: one of Roberto’s limited production wines. Deep yellow gold with delicate straw and herbal notes backed by a a citrus and mineral freshness, and hints of something floral. The palate is dramatic; softly round and mouth filling; floral, waxy notes and dense phenolics with a slight tannin on the finish. Extraordinary length as a result. It will be fascinating to follow it as it ages and develops, but in terms of complexity for the money, this is already giving bang for buck.” – L&S
Escondite del Ardacho Las Guillermas 2017…. $78.95 (6pk)
Grown 450 meters in altitude and highly influenced by the Mediterranean making for a soft, gentle microclimate which shows in the wine. From 65-year-old vines, planted in a single-vineyard with clay & gravel soils. Spontaneously fermented in oak vats, aged in French barrels and Hungarian oak for 10-11 months. Medium-bodied with expressive & persistent acidity. Supple & fresh with red berry, chocolate & coffee notes. Shows incredible potential for aging.
