Noble Estates presents the South African wines of Anthony Hamilton Russell’s Hermanus winery.
Southern Right is a small Pinotage and Sauvignon blanc specialist located on a strikingly beautiful property in the cool, maritime, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation in South Africa.
Anthony Hamilton Russell, owner of the acclaimed Hamilton Russell winery which also makes only two wines, founded Southern Right in 1994.
The wines are named after the rare Southern Right whales, which frequent the cool South Atlantic Walker Bay. With each bottle sold, Southern Right makes a contribution to their conservation or conservation in the area.
“Southern Right’s strong, cooling, maritime influence and extremely old and stony clay-rich soils, combined with our tight focus on only two wines, have enabled us to re-define South Africa’s unique variety Pinotage with a more classically styled wine. Our lighter structured sandstone-derived soils combine with our clay-rich soils to produce a highly individual Sauvignon blanc, with marked minerality and complexity.” – Anthony Hamilton Russell
2016 Sauvignon Blanc – $21.95 – 89 points robertparker.com
Sourced from 17 different parcels, the nose has gooseberry and light chalk. On the palate has crisp acidity and a touch of spice and ginger.
2015 Pinotage – $26.95 – 90 points James Molesworth winespectator.com
Packed with complex berry fruit, beautiful tannins and subtle wood spice. Full ripeness and the longer hang-time afforded by cooler sites, combined with the complex, more classic fruit aromas and structure, makes it a very individual expression of Pinotage.
