The calm before the storm at Gian Luca Colombo’s home, before the Vespa ride… as you can see I have seen a fair bit of both wine and sun.
Last year I was fortunate enough to be asked to participate in the wine portion of the mighty Collisioni Festival in Barolo, Piemonte.
During one of Ian d’Agata and Michele Longo‘s ‘s many fantastic structured tastings I had the opportunity to taste one of the wines from a new house called Réva, and a bit of research brought me to a frenetic and passionate young Winemaker named Gian Luca Colombo. After tracking him down and voicing my enthusiasm for his wine, he insisted that I came to his home (his new winery was under construction) to taste the full range of the fruits of his vinous labouring.
Throughout our time together I gleaned that Gian Luca, despite his relative youth, has worked with many of most prestigious houses in the region, and it is this wealth of experience that he brings to the wines of Réva.
Some three hours later, after an exhaustive tasting of some seriously thrilling wines, Gian Luca realised that I was going to be late for my next panel discussion, and so he sat me on the back of his shiny red Vespa and we shot back to the tiny town of Barolo. Having never been on the back of such a vehicle before, this was quite the experience for me.
