We have four new products releasing at the LCBO this weekend:
Dandelion Menagerie of the Barossa Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2019 +399899 $20.95
Deep red with an earthy core and a violet rim edge, hinting at its youth and its life. Bright cherry and Redskin Lollie aromatics – all courtesy of the 80% grenache in this giving blend. The aromatics are well-heightened, however, by some freshly ground black and pink pepper coming from the shiraz component. This already integrated red wine starts with full flavours of sour cherry. The palate then stretched luxuriously out with the welcoming sweetness of the grenache fruit tempered by acidity – a combination of textures and tension that Barossa grenache does so effortlessly and well. Shiraz throws in some blackberry pertness and some balsamic edge. The tannins are rounded, earthy and fine; but also textured and poised, bringing symmetry to voluptuousness and voluptuousness to symmetry. 80% Grenache, 15% Shiraz, 5% Mataro
Food pairing: A spicy chargrilled sausage, this wine would happily relax with; yet a tagine with the strident flavours of North Africa would not bother it.
95 Pts & #1 – Aaron Brasher, therealreview.com, February 23, 2021
“Florals, spice, dark cherry, a touch of menthol, there’s some really enticing gear happening here on the nose. The palate is fleshy, juicy and driven by sweet, dark, plummy fruit. The tannin is firm and grippy, but constructive and ensures the slurpy fruit character stands in line. There’s a lovely spiciness and roundness in the wine and the acidity likewise is partnering with these firm tannins to ensure freshness and delicious drinkability. Drink date: 2021-2031.”
Montes Alpha Special Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 +649160 $24.95
As is characteristic of Cabernet Sauvignon from our Marchigüe vineyard, this vintage shows an intense and deep carmine-red colour. The nose shows great elegance and potency in expression, with aromas of ripe red fruit such as plum, cherry, and raspberry syrup. There are also differentiating aromas of tobacco, candy, and leather, with a very balanced intervention of toasted notes thanks to the 12 months in French barrels. The palate is balanced with rounded tannins and big body, while flavourful, with flavours that highlight even more the perceived aromas. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah and 5% Carmenere
Food pairing: Highly recommended with red meats, stir-fried beef, spaghetti with Bolognese sauce, pork chops with Cabernet-mushroom sauce.
94 Pts – Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2022
“For Aurelio Montes, the cabernet sauvignons from Marchigüe grown on the granitic soils in western Colchagua offer a special grip, a structure made of firm tannins, as well as acidity that’s more pronounced than that of the reds from Montes’ other Colchagua vineyard in Apalta. This falls smack in the middle. A cabernet built from its tannins – a firm, piercing construction that gives rise to flavors of black fruits and spices in a big and very well-balanced wine. Drink till 2025+.”
Morambro Creek Jip Jip Rocks Shiraz Cabernet 2019 +186114 $17.95
Deep purple colour. Boysenberry and mulberry aromas with a hint of cedar and pepper. Similar berry fruits show through on the opulent, textured palate with a lingering finish. 55% Shiraz, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon
93 Pts & Gold & Exceptional – tastings.com, July 23, 2020
“Black ruby colour. Interesting aromas of cured meats, intense berry concentrate, oregano, ginger-honey-lemon lozenge, eucalyptus, hints of bacon, and raspberry cake with a round, crisp, fruity medium-full body and a warming, intriguing, medium-long ripe plum, blistered berries, rooibos tea, and hint of tropical fruit finish with moderate oak flavor. A bold and balanced Australian red that’s drinking beautifully now.”
J. Lohr Arroyo Vista Chardonnay 2018 +171272 $34.95
“The rich palate texture is achieved through the use of classic Burgundian techniques, such as primary and malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels and weekly stirring of the lees. The palate is balanced by fresh flavors of apple, pear, and Meyer lemon cream with a long, sweet oak finish.” Kristen Barnhisel, Winemaker.
Food pairing: Triple crème brie cheese, herb roasted chicken, seafood risotto, or hazelnut-crusted halibut.
