Visiting with Giovanna at Le Boncie was a true standout of our visit to Tuscany in April. After driving past rows of verdant vines, riotous growths of grains, grasses and wildflowers throughout the countryside, arriving at Le Boncie feels like you’ve entered another realm. A tiny 4Ha vineyard planted on an exposed, rocky slope in total contrast to fertile fields that surround the area. The vines are head trained, sitting low to the ground and trained into a tight coil, a technique Giovanna picked up from a friend in Pantelleria. People will tell you that the greatest wines tend to come from vines that have to struggle to grow, forcing them to root deep into the soil, and the vines here wear their struggle openly. We were shocked to find out that after 6 years of growth the ‘new plantings’ stood less than a foot off the ground, the knurled wood of the trunk revealing the work that has gone in to achieving this feat.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous is also a big fan of these wines, reviewing them personally each vintage. He says of the 2021 vintage ‘Giovanna Morganti and Giorgio Serao turned out a stellar set of wines that will go down as some of their finest ever… Readers who want to explore Sangiovese at its finest must put Le Boncie at the top of their lists.

The wines themselves are knockouts – pure and fresh while also containing incredible complexity and admirable concentration. The commitment to obtaining the best from their vines keeps production small, and our allocation equally so. This is your one chance this year to purchase these wines, don’t miss out!

2021 Le Trame Toscana IGT
98pts, Antonio Galloni for Vinous, June 2024
The 2021 Le Trame is everything I hoped it would be. Intensely aromatic, silky and deep, with explosive fruit, the 2021 is a rapturously beautiful wine that captures proprietor Giovanna Morganti at her very best. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2021 needs time to be at its most expressive, but its potential is already evident from the very early going. Le Boncie could very well turn out to be Italy’s next superstar estate. Readers will want to snap up these wines before that becomes apparent to the public.

2022 Cinque Toscana IGT
92pts, Antonio Galloni for Vinous, June 2024
The 2022 Cinque is a gorgeous, exuberant wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Succulent red-toned fruit, spice, blood orange and pomegranate are some of the notes that are dialed up in this forward, racy red. Readers who want to get a feel for the house style will want to start here. The 2022 is magnificent.
