The Draw:
Wow, what a stunner! La Vendimia, meaning “the harvest,” may be the penultimate ‘jóven’ wine; that is a bottling aged for less than six months in oak barrels. Coming from the warmer area of Rioja Oriental, we lean into the strength of Garnacha here, partnered with Tempranillo. Bright, bright, bright fruit gently kissed by oak: like baskets of berries being carried home from a country market. A beautiful wine and exceptional value.
The Winery:
Álvaro Palacios is a true icon in the Spanish wine world. Sought after globally for his perfect expression of Priorat, ‘L’Ermita’, he also revolutionized Bierzo and is making some of the most interesting expressions of Rioja today. Palacios Remondo is located in the warmer, the more easterly segment known as Rioja Oriental (formerly Rioja Baja). Old vineyards are grown at high elevations under organic conditions. Wines are raised with minimal intervention and maximum care.
Pairings and Tips:
Hope you’re hungry, because versatility is at the core of this wine. Braised meats or stews would be stellar, but truthfully any range of lighter fare would succeed. And don’t forget the romesco!
