Chalk, Slate, Gravel presents an orange wine from a Riesling master of the Mosel…
Dr. Daniel Molitor hails from the renown Mosel house, Viermorgenhof, where he has developed the experimental label, ‘Stairs’n’Roses’, which includes an ‘ohrenschwein’. The Molitor family has allotted a limited amount of their rare orange wine to Ontario at the LCBO.com online shop: the 2018 Stairs’n’Roses Ohrenschwein ($42.10 – LCBO# 772129).
Only 600 bottles of the 2018 orange wine were produced. Bone dry at at 3.6 grams per litre of residual sugar, the Stairs’n’Roses was fermented on skin for three weeks, put through malolactic conversion, and elevated for 18 months in old oak barrels.
Citrus fruit is seasoned with spicy and herbal notes against persistent acidity and a powerful tannic backbone. This wine is ideal for a late summer barbecue of grilled meats and vegetables, or with snacks as a noteworthy aperitif.
