Exquisite Chenin Blanc Blend
Andrea Mullineux has a deft ability when it comes to blending, a principal reason that Tim Atkin, MW, named Chris and Andrea Mullineux his 2017 South African Winemakers of the Year. This Chenin Blanc is blended with several grapes, such as Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Semillon. Expect a richly textured, savoury, honeyed, mouthfilling, subtle wine.

Lemon and Lime sherbet, white peach, chalk and slate, apple blossom, together with some roasted almonds and hazelnuts. There’s some brioche and gentle oak aromas just to round out the package. Juicy nectarine and peach flavours are supported by quenching acidity, together with a mineral lick and generous texture from the lees work. This is a delicious Chardonnay with hallmark Pennon Hill qualities exhibiting great varietal definition and regional expression.

Latricieres-Chambertin is an 18.2 acre Grand Cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyard is just south of Chambertin, and it is essentially flat. There are 12 property owners within Latricieres-Chambertin, which has been farmed as a vineyard since the 16th century. Medium intense smudgy ruby. Very light, almost bonbon nose. Rather harsh and chewy. Hint of animal and masses of tannin still.

The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru les Cazetiers has a voluminous, fruit-forward bouquet with ample redcurrant and cranberry scents, though I find more clarity and terroir-expression offered by the Champeaux at this point. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannin – tart red cherry fruit and quite saline in the mouth, leading to a precise but quite persistent finish. This is a “serious” Cazetiers that will need a few months to lighten up. (Reviewed by Neal Martin for Robert Parker; 224, The Wine Advocate)
