If I were to tell you that Winemaker Nicolas Potel had, many years ago, through his beguiling wines, forever changed the way that I appreciate Burgundy, I would be telling you a mere fraction of the whole story.
Since I first tasted the fruits of his labours, I have had nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for this gentleman and, in turn, every bottle that he puts his name to. When it comes to integrity in the vinous minefield that is Burgundy, Nicolas, or Nico as he is affectionately known, displays an honesty and an earnestness that is truly inspirational. He is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of my favourite winemakers.
Hyperbole aside, upon meeting him for lunch at Toronto’s Le Paradis with a handful of other Sommeliers a couple of weeks back, I found the man behind these delightful wines to be as genial and genuine as his many bottlings.
Nicolas Potel is the real deal… accept no imitations.
