Pinot Noir and Twenty Mile Bench
The Twenty Mile Bench sub-appellation is known for Pinot Noir. The bench has a special microclimate that benefits from warming lake breezes but is sheltered from the strong prevailing wind by the Niagara Escarpment giving Pinot the moderate climate it likes. This same ridge traps warm lake air in the autumn and gives an extended growing season for Pinot to ripen perfectly. The slope and aspect of bench vineyards allow for excellent sun exposure and drainage. Throughout the Twenty Mile Bench there is a variety of top soils that are ideal for growing Pinot Noir. The substrate below is solid limestone and sedimentary dolomite that contribute the distinct minerality found in the wines.
