Nicholas Pearce presents Matthieu Barret’s Le Petit Ours and Domaine de Coulet Syrahs…
Domaine du Coulet and Matthieu Barret
Domaine du Coulet and it’s vigneron Matthieu Barret hold special places in our hearts and it may or may not have something to do with the adorable bear drawing on the labels. There’s something convivial about Matthieu’s wines, but all cuteness aside they are some of the most honest examples of Syrah that we’ve ever tasted.
Matthieu has been creating terroir-driven wines since 1998 from vineyards in Cornas and recently the Côtes du Rhône. His wines are certified organic and biodynamic, both practices that he is very adamant about. ‘Great wines are made from simple grapes. Any winemaking, even perfect, cannot create what we can get in a natural way. Grapes hold this “magic”. So, we cannot destroy it. Our winemaking is flexible, to let the wine do as it likes in order to best express its terroir and vintage.’ Unfined and unfiltered, the wines are aged in used oak or concrete to preserve the purity of fruit and freshness. The Petit Ours wines are produced from vineyards in Visan, about an hour south of the Domaine, and are named after Matthieu’s nickname – Little Bear.
Tis the season for cozying up with friends and family and these wines are sure to impress. We’re sure you’ll find that this little bear is jjjuuussst right.
