The current LCBO CLASSICS catalogue is jam packed full of incredible wines, all of which would be great additions to any cellar. Many of these selections are designed for medium to long term cellaring, however a few wines are drinking wonderfully right now, or would only benefit from short term cellaring.
We have three wines featured in this catalogue: a single vineyard Alsace white from legendary biodynamic producer Marcel Deiss, a extremely limited production “Super Tuscan” from Suvereto producer Petra, and a Californian “Rhone Ranger” red from Core.
Purchasing wines through Classics has changed from what used to be a lottery system to a first-come, first-served ordering process. Ordering began on March 6, however these three wines are still available. Click HERE for details.
On another note, we have a very special dinner coming up in April featuring winemaker extraordinaire, Keith Nichols, AKA the “Silver Fox” from Nichols Winery & Cellars in Paso Robles, California. Please click here for details.
And, please come join us at the California Wine Fair on Friday, April 4 at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa, as well as Monday, April 7 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. We will be pouring the wines of Nichols Winery & Cellars (Paso Robles), Peju Family Estate Wines (Napa), Silver Palm (North Coast) and Eos Estate (Paso Robles).
Hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Le Sommelier

THE WINES
Core Elevation Sensation Alta Mesa Vineyard 2007
Review: “Even darker and showing more smoked dark fruits, coffee, and spiced meat like characteristics, the 2007 Core Elevation Sensation Alta Mesa 42-months is a beauty. Round, mouth filling and dense, with brilliant purity of fruit and a chewy, broad finish, this needs 2-3 years of bottle age and should shine for 10-12 years.”
Score: 93+ (Jeb Dunnuck, The Rhone Report, Dec 2011)
Varietals: 62% Grenache and 38% Mourvedre
Region: Santa Barbara County, California
Price: $52 (per bottle)
LCBO #365411
Petra 2008
Review: “The 2008 Petra comes alive in the glass with layers of blueberry jam, spices, minerals and flowers. This Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend possesses striking inner perfume and fabulous balance in a rich, textured style that is highly appealing. Firm yet well integrated tannins frame the vibrant finish. Petra spent 18 months in French oak barrels, 80% new. Anticipated Maturity 2018-2028.”
Score: 94 (Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, Aug 2011)
Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot
Region: Tuscany, Italy
Price: $95 (per bottle) LCBO #123208
Marcel Deiss Burg 2008
Review: “A high-toned nose of licorice and maraschino; litchi and apricot distillate; wisteria, honeysuckle, and rowan in Deiss’s tous-cepages 2008 Burg led me to anticipate even more than the modest sweetness that greets the taster on a silken palate. In a manner reminiscent of this year’s Langenberg, this displays lovely lift and sheer lusciousness of fruit that engages in positively shimmering, kaleidoscopic interchange with profuse and alluring floral essences and saline, chalky, flinty mineral notes in a riveting, truly haunting finish. This should be a profound pleasure to follow for 15-20 years.”
Score: 94 (David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate, May 2011)
