Five years ago, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario decided to tackle the growing problem of childhood obesity. Their response to the crisis was Spark Together for Healthy Kids which partners with community groups and province-wide organisations to get kids access to exercise and healthy food. The Spark program’s tagline says it all: helping kids live well today for a healthy tomorrow. Heart & Stroke grants funds to organisations that propose either advocacy projects or action projects that range from “walking school buses” so kids can safely walk back and forth between home and school to teaching basic fresh food preperation techniques. I sat down with program manager Sharon Brodovsky at Heart & Stroke’s mid-town Toronto offices to learn more about Spark for the video below…

I’m so happy to see that Sharon’s desk is as messy as mine 🙂 She’s doing great work and we are happy to recipients of their advocacy grant.
In Sept. 2011, all Ontario schools need to comply with a new food and beverage policy designed to help all schools encourage healthy eating habits for students.
With the help of a wonderful public health nutritionist, we recorded a 12 minute slide presentation to explain how schools can get ready! Lucy Valleau is an engaging speaker and her slides can also be downloaded for free. Take a peak:
