Woodman Wines & Spirits presents a Syrah from France to look for at Vintages…
Francois Villard L’Appel des Sereines Syrah 2018
LCBO #12978 | $19.95
The Draw:
Serious Syrah from a master of his craft. Effusive, high-impact aromatics that capture the wild, peppery spirit of the grape for a song. Dense, well-structured, showing supple texture and excellent length. This cuvée is pure Syrah, mostly sourced from villages near Condrieu but some in St-Joseph, and declassified as Vin de France.
The Winery:
Arguably, François Villard has risen to ‘rock-star winemaker’ status over the last few years thanks in part to his amazing Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu bottlings. His career began in hospitality as a chef before transitioning to front of house, and eventually winemaking. The new vintage is 55% whole cluster fermentation; raised in a combination of older vats and stainless steel to more properly reflect the spirited terroir of the Northern Rhône.
Pairings and Tips:
Is it game night yet? This wine is aching for venison, boar, or meats with a wild streak. However, if we’re seeking a simpler alternative, the spectrum of cassoulet, stew, or roasted fowl present excellent matches. Give it a little air in the decanter and have fun. Feel free to hold another 3-8 years and enjoy the evolution.
