Mt Etna is an otherworldly location. Between the omnipresent steam from the vents spread across its slopes, lenticular clouds adorning the summit and regular eruptions, it is not surprising that Roman mythology believed the blacksmithing forge of the god Vulcan was located underneath the volcano. What is surprising is that the slopes of Etna are producing some of the most vibrant wines in Italy. Recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2013, Mt Etna is home to a number of centenarian vines, planted on ancient terraces lined with volcanic scoria.

Palmento Costanzo takes their name from the ancient stone winemaking facility called palmento, and this respect for the history of their environment carries through in their winemaking. Making use of the slopes of the mountain, the winery is gravity fed, reducing their energy consumption and allowing for gentler handling of the grapes. The Mofete range comes the young vines (less than 30 years old), while the Contrada Santo Spirito is from one of Etna’s named Vigna, from old bush trained vines up to 100 years in age!
