‘Dark and tight, this is pretty closed down right now, though a well of cassis and black currant fruit is certainly there, along with wet slate, sweet tobacco and licorice root notes. The finish shows lively bramble and sassafras hints alongside ample tannic grip. More backward than the typical ’19. Worth holding off on.’

‘Just 4.8ha of Oakville Cabernet are designated for Groth’s Reserve blocks. This blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot was aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. It spent another 14 months in bottle before being released—wonderfully rich and expressive black cherry, leather, and tobacco aromatics. Full-bodied and framed by supple, fine-grained tannins and building finesse in its dusty dried violets, rose petal florals, and dusty mineral backbone. A nice, long, pleasant finish rounds out this polished Reserve Cabernet. Certainly one for the cellar, but incredibly pleasing at the pull of the cork today.’

‘Fragrant aromas of black cherry, plums, wild herbs and sweet cedar meld, building a rich aromatic profile that carries through on the full-bodied palate. It is a generous wine, though quite compact and tightly wound up in its youth; it has all the characteristic Groth traits of an age-worthy Napa Cabernet. Perfectly delineated blackberry and black cherry fruit is laced with fragrant graphite minerality and dried sage nuances, violets, creme de cassis, and with some air, reveals blue fruit aromatics. A spine of firm acidity supports fine-grained chocolate-y tannins. Splendid. These are not flashy, showy wines out the gate, but they are well-built and will deliver great pleasure for decades, as I’m confident this 2021 will prove with time.’
