Malcolm Jolley finds a $17 value-driven wine at Vintages LCBO.
The 2012 Château Rigaud (LCBO# 393561) is a classic Southern French red wine at a great price: $16.95. Fro the up and coming (i.e. not particularly well known) Languedoc region of Faugères, the Rigaud is a typical Mediterranean blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèrdre. It displays the best of garrigue-showing reds of the region: lots blackberries to plum fruit, and a smoky finish. What separates it from most wines at the its price point, though, is its equilibrium. The 2012 Château Rigaud is well balanced: a touch of tannin, but not distracting, and some good and fresh acidity. This is a wine that is light enough to happily get you through dinner, and rich enough to enjoy a glass on the couch after. This wine wants a dinner party.
