Chateau des Tours Brouilly 2019
LCBO #637835 | $18.95
The Draw:
Crazy great fruit here. A bit closed off the hop, but opens with Black and Maraschino cherries. With air, big strawberries and a through-line of dark chocolate. Chewy midpalate and appreciable density here despite the natural freshness. A little larger (13.5% alc), but that is the way the wind is blowing, especially in a classic vintage like 2019. One of the best values around south of the Cote d’Or.
The Winery:
At the foot of Mount Brouilly, in the very centre of the famed Beaujolais appellation, Château des Tours has 70 hectares (173 acres) of vineyard. The property’s oldest records date back to 1331, though family ownership has changed over the last seven hundred years. After the Richard family acquired it in 1986, the chateau was renovated with a renewed emphasis on quality winemaking.
Pairings and Tips:
This Gamay has just a touch more stuffing and tannin than typical Beaujolais-Villages; its rounded, broad structure gives it great definition. Boudin noir, pork loin, duck, or bavette would be excellent matches, and keep in mind hearty lentil or mushroom dishes. Capable of aging 4-6 years but drinks well now with a bit of air.
