One of my best memories of Vin Italy last year was my time with Federico Ceretto and listening to him talk about all the work they have done in improving the soil quality in their vineyards. Years of painstaking research and quality testing has resulted in a movement towards all organic and biodynamic farming. All the while we were drinking ’06 San Lorenzo Barolo from a double magnum!
Notable wine writer Antonio Galloni described the year 2013 as, “a cool growing season and late harvest produced gorgeous Barolos with striking aromatics, silky tannins, sculpted, vibrant fruit and mid-weight structures. Barolo – $74.99 – 93 points Wine Advocate
The classic Barolo, is a blend of two appellations: the gentler of the two, whose area is defined by the La Morra and the more austere and masculine one, coming from slopes of Gabutti in Serralunga. This is a classic Barolo – light garnet in color with Barolo’s quintessential aromas of roses, tart cherries, and hints of truffles. Ceretto’s Barolo DOCG is extraordinarily approachable now, but it will continue to reward the patient wine drinker as it evolves over the course of several years.
Barolo Brunate – $149.99 – 95 points Vinous, Antonio Galloni
This single vineyard in the commune of La Morra, ranges from 230 metres to more than 400 metres above sea level. Ceretto owns just over five and a half hectares of the total of 28 hectares of the vineyard. This is a silky-smooth Barolo that shows great aromatic complexity. Aromas of ripe red cherries, dried roses, red licorice, and cloves combine with notes of tobacco and earth. On the palate, this wine is richly tannic with a long, pleasant finish.
