Le Sommelier has secured a small allocation of special La Ragnaie wines from Montalcino.
“Le Ragnaie is, in my opinion, the break-out star… the essence of balance and Brunello beauty.” – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
We are thrilled to have secured a small allocation of some really incredible Brunellos, from one of the most exciting and relatively new wineries from Montalcino, Le Ragnaie. Winemaker and owner Riccardo Campinoti released his first vintage in 2003, and has since produced many profound wines. Without a doubt, their wines are among some of the finessed I have tasted. In 2010, Riccardo crafted a 100 point wine (James Suckling) as well as a 98 point wine. Needless to say, since then, his wines have been incredibly difficult to source.
“Riccardo Campinoti is a rising star of the Castelnuovo dell’Abate sub-zone of the appellation.” – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
Le Ragnaie cultivates their vines in three diverse microclimates in Montalcino, which allows them to offer three different types of Brunello, each a testament to the land in which it was grown. They work exclusively with Sangiovese, farming the vineyards following the strict guidelines of organic agriculture. Furthermore, they do not use fertilizer, but rather plant covercrops which in the fall consist of legumes, clovers and grasses. These cover-crops help regenerate the land after a long summer season of work. They also aid in enriching the organic substance of the land, all the while penetrating deeply the roots of the various planted species. Moreover, the diversity of plants in the vineyard prevents superficial erosion, and instead favours the absorption of water and creates an important habitat for many species of animals and insects. There well thought out holistic approach in the vineyards has translated to creating wines that have a sense of place, with power and elegance all in one.
If you purchase the Wine Spectator, you would have seen Riccardo’s photo in the Aug 31, 2016 issue, where he was asked to talk about the 2011 vintage.
