Nicholas Pearce presents the wines of Pardevalles made with the indigenous grapes of León…

Javier del Blanco from Bodega Pardevalles visited us in Toronto this past October and took us on an adventure through the land of León with his delicious wines.

In 1949 it was Rafael Alonso who founded Pardevalles in the village of Valdevimbre, continuing with the family tradition of growing grapes and making wine. The winemaking tradition in León goes back more than 400 years, when people used to make wine in underground caves.

Pardevalles has pioneered the cultivation of the autochthonous varietals of León: Albarín and Prieto Picudo. The grapes grow on soils characterized by the cantos rodados, white pebbles , that retain the heat of the sun protecting the vines from the cold temperatures during the night.

Today, the 2nd and 3rd generations have taken over, always preserving the essence with which the winery was founded 70 years ago.

We are excited to offer you a special selection of their wines for arrival in Winter 2020.

Albarín Blanco 2018 $21.95
A classic in our portfolio, sourced from the vineyard Los Nistales. The grapes go through a skin contact maceration for 48 hours before being pressed. The juice ferments in stainless steel tanks, yielding to a fresh, fruit-forward and crisp wine, suitable to pair with anything you crave.

Available for Private Order:

Albarín Blanco 2019 $21.95
2019 has been a great year in terms of quality, even though it’s been scarce. The dry weather in July, August and September contributed to an excellent ripening of the grapes, deriving into an even more fruit-forward wine.

Klaret Rosado 2018 $21.95
60% Prieto Picudo & 40% Albarín hand-haversted. The combination of white and red grapes delivers a beautifully pale rosé, that due to its fermentation in stainless steel tanks, retains all the fruity aromas and a bright freshness.

Tinto 2018 $19.95
100% Prieto Picudo. Beginning with a coldmaceration to extract as many aromas as possible. The grapes are then macerated at warmer temperatures for 2 weeks; and once pressed, the wine comes back to a stainless steel tanks where it ages over its lees.

Gramonal 2016** $26.95
Single vineyard wine from El Gramonal plot. 100% Prieto Picudo, hand-harvested and cold macerated for 72 hours to extract the fruitiness. Then, the grapes ferment and macerate for 14 days at a constant temperature of 26 ° C . Once pressed, it stays in stainless steel, where malolactic fermentation occurs.
