I’d say that approximately every six months or so I get a message from a peer working within the restaurant world, asking if I possibly have time to meet for a drinks as they wish to pick my brain a little.
Over the years I have come to learn that this almost always means “how can get out of working as a Sommelier on the floor?” and believe me it’s a challenging question indeed.
Does one move into wine sales? Winemaking? Writing? Brand Ambassador for a house? Teaching?
A gentleman who found the most inspiring and unique answer to that particular perennial quandary is Wayne Young. After working as a Sommelier for the famed Bastianich family in New York City, Wayne decided that he was burnt out and needed to make a major change in his life.
Cue an offer from his boss that he simply could not refuse… one which transpired to be the the perfect position for a fellow with his considerable talents.
