Winemaker Alessio Planeta taking in the sights and sounds of the Trinity Bellwoods Farmers' Market

Winemaker Alessio Planeta taking in the sights and sounds of the Trinity Bellwoods Farmers’ Market.

I’m always surprised that we don’t drink more Sicilian wine than we do, especially when one considers that it is the second largest wine growing region in Italy. Most people aren’t aware of the fact that with just under 300,000 acres under vine, Sicily has around the same vineyard area as Chile and South Africa.

Planeta have been making wines on the island since 1995, and today produce wines from five wineries in Sambuca, Menfi (two), Vittoria and Noto, and Mount Etna. Winemaker Alessio Planeta was in Toronto the week before last to host a dinner at Campagnolo, so we decided to take him to the farmers’ market in Trinity Bellwoods and find out what he’s up to down in Sicily.
