2022 Weingut Rudi Rüttger “Le Tendre” Riesling, Pfalz, Germany (Alcohol 11%, Residual Sugar 15 g/l) LCBO Vintages $14.25 (750ml glass bottle)
This has to be one of the best value whites on the LCBO shelves right now; I cracked this open just then other night and was quite frankly amazed at the value exhibited here.
The nose is extremely citric, with lemon, lime, and grapefruit making an appearance alongside some ripe apricot, fragrant honey, and intriguing petrichor.
Although it carries 15 g/l of residual sugar, it tastes pretty damn dry, just nudging into off-dry by a mere whisker. The brisk acidity carries the fruit and sugar with ease, and the resultant balance is a real delight, making this a most enjoyable glass of wine to knock back. It’s mouth-puckeringly tart with some absolutely gorgeous saline flavours, and that exactly what makes this wine so appealing.
Despite that bit of sweetness, I’d suggest you try this on any friends who say they don’t like German wines, as this wholly accessible bottling should create quite a number of converts.
It drinks quite fantastically all by itself, but I’d like to try this with chilled shrimp or crudo.
