2022 Domäne Wachau Terrassen Federspiel Grüner Veltliner (Alcohol 12%, Residual Sugar 2 g/l) LCBO Vintages $19.95 (750ml glass bottle)

Having just returned from a trip to Austria, I was reminded just how much I enjoyed the wines of über-co-operative Domäne Wachau.

Zipping down the Danube in a small, wooden, 12 person boat with five Masters of Wine on board and sipping the wines as we viewed the famed sites of Kamptal, Kremstal, and Wachau was a truly wonderful experience that I’ll never forget. One of our wines that day was from Domäne Wachau, and it prompted me to check out what was available in Ontario, especially as I had recommended one of their Grüner Veltliner wines almost exactly a decade ago.

I certainly wasn’t disappointed, as their 2022 Terrassen Federspiel Grüner Veltliner was just what I was looking for.

On the nose, one will find the customary white pepper with peach, apricot, and pear, but there’s also a whole load of ripe, exotic, tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango. It’s a medium bodied wine with good, firm acidity and a lovely, ripe fruit core. Texturally, the wine is surprisingly rich and dense for a Federspiel, but I’ve found that substantial mouthfeel across the entire range of Domaine Wachau’s white wines. The finish is medium-length and has a little bit of bitter grip.

Seeing as there is so much delightfully fresh Ontario spargel (read: asparagus) available right now, this food pairing is a shoo-in.
