Advocates of the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture, the Viret family has chosen to employ a particular form of natural viticulture throughout their estate located in Saint Maurice, Rhône. Known as “cosmoculture®”, this is based on cosmotelluric exchanges. Everything is organised in such a way that both vines and wines are able draw on their own natural defences.

Domaine Viret Solstice Blanc Dry 2021

Solstice Blanc is a thirst-quenching natural white wine with aromas of flowers and stone fruit made from Vermentino, Muscat petit grain, Marsanne, Viognier, Clairette and Bourboulenc grown in the south-facing terraces of Aygues. It was hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts in concrete vats. Full bodied, on the nose it has aromas of almonds and lime zest, and a hint of wild Mediterranean herbs and spice. On the palate, it is round and creamy, with notes of vanilla, orange peel and candied grapefruit.

Domaine Viret Energie 2021

From young vines of Syrah with a splash of Mourvèdre and tiny amounts Picpoul Noir, Vaccarèse, Muscardin, and Counoise, “Energie;” vinified and aged in a combination of cement and steel tanks for one year with no added sulfur. The long but gentle infusion-method of extraction gives this wine great clarity of line, with pure, ringing acidity and a tasteful spiciness that speaks more of the northern Rhône than the frequently coarse Syrah of these southerly zones; its name could hardly be more apt.

Domaine Viret Renaissance 2017

It’s a beautiful, powerful blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, aged in concrete for 24 months, to preserve the natural fruit flavours. This blend shows powerful, ripe dark fruit, leather, black olives and an array of herbs and spices that linger well into the finish. This can easily be enjoyed on its own, but will just as well accompany hearty stews, game & well-seasoned grilled meat or vegetables.

Exopto is Latin for “to long for” or “to desire greatly” and it is the dream of Frenchman Tom Puyaubert and his family to endeavor to craft and assemble wines where the whole adds up to more than the sum of their parts.  Tom relocated from France to Rioja in 2000 after falling in love with the region and working for the French cooperage Saury as its Spain representative.

When Tom began Exopto, he wanted to do a project that produced wines within this historical context of Rioja – combining both worlds in a unique way.  His idea is to remain true to the blending of the principle grape varieties and to do so from the best terroirs/villages for those varieties crossing sub-regions of Rioja.   Each wine though, has a majority of a different principle grape – showcasing that variety specifically within the context of a blend.  The viticulture and winemaking model is that of the “vigneron” days – small plots of vines in the extremes, wild yeast fermentation in concrete or old oak vats and then aging in a way to showcase the fruit, minerality and terroir not the wood or aged flavours that people often associate with Rioja.

Bozeto de Exopto Rioja 2020

Deep red with a bright rim. Spicy cherry and black raspberry on the nose, with brisk mineral and floral overtones. Juicy and focused, offering sweet raspberry and blackberry flavours and snappy acidity. Impresses with precision rather than power, and finishes with juicy berry flavours and good persistence.

Enjoy this wine with grilled meats, roasted turkey and cured cheeses.

Located in the town of Pilio, about thirty miles east of Rome, Abbia Nova is the project of cousins Daniele and Pierluca Proietti. They farm 7 hectares of vines, mostly inherited from Daniele’s father, with many of the vines being indigenous varietals to the area. Some of these vines are at least eighty years old.

The cousins follow a combination of natural and traditional methods both in the vineyards and in the cellar, starting with organic and then moving to biodynamic principles. They avoid treatments like sulphur and copper and instead use natural resistance methods that they produce themselves. Their wines are vegan-friendly and organic certified from vintage 2020 on.
