If Napa Valley is the centre of the California wine universe, then Oakville is its beating heart. In the middle of it all is Groth, surrounded by legendary vineyards and cult wine producers, and so it is with anticipation, excitement and a little happy dance that we introduce the rare opportunity of a vertical of Groth’s Reserve Cabernet. For those who love this storied winery located in the prestigious Oakville AVA, this mixed case will have you putting your dancing shoes on too.

Groth Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Reserve’ Vertical – Groth’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon represents the finest lots of the vintage from the Reserve blocks on the Oakville Estate and is the pinnacle of their growing and winemaking efforts. The unique soil profile and ideal climate of the nearly 28-acre band of Reserve blocks combine to produce the ultimate expression of Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon: elegant, age-worthy and world-class. The wines in this vertical collection, from vintages 2013, 2014 and 2015, are entering a beautiful stage in their evolution, displaying power and resonance while highlighting the depth and delineation of wines from one of the world’s most remarkable Cabernet growing regions.

The Wines

Groth 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Reserve’, Oakville
93 points – Wine Spectator
“Remarkably rich and well-made, with a taut, dense core of earthy anise and black licorice notes woven into currant and blackberry elements. Once settled, the flavors expand and lift, imparting a sense of elegance and finesse without losing the tannic backbone. Best from 2020 through 2034.”

Groth 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Reserve’, Oakville
94 points – Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast
“Muted at first, this reserve wine shows a deft hand. A red currant tone is met by a mild grip of tannins and a soft midpalate that is lightly rich in coconut shavings and mocha. Supple and balanced in richness, it offers classic flavors of cassis and cherry wrapped in supportive oak.”

Groth 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Reserve’, Oakville
95 points – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2018
“The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is fabulous. Rich and unctuous in the glass, but without losing its classic feel, the Reserve conveys the richness of the vintage nicely. Black cherry, crème de cassis, smoke, licorice and sweet spice infuse the resonant, super-inviting finish. What a beautiful wine this is. Drink 2023-2035.”

Groth 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville
95 points – John Szabo, MS, WineAlign, September 2022
“Groth’s 2018 cabernet is a flat-out gorgeous wine. I love the seamless texture, the perfectly ripe fruit, the beautifully integrated oak and the excellent length and complexity. And, while far from an inexpensive wine, it punches well-above its weight in the relative Napa Valley context, equaling, and surpassing, many far pricier speculative bottlings. The maturity of the estate, established in 1981, is on full display; no need for flash or bling here, just and excellent, meticulously-farmed site and classic winemaking. Best now- 2038 or so – this has the stuffing to go the distance.”

Groth 2019 ‘Oakcross Proprietary Red’, Oakville
94 Points – Tim Fish, Wine Spectator, 2022
“A dynamic blend, combining deep structure with finesse and polish, this features black cherry and cassis flavors laced with toasty spice, red licorice and a hint of dusty herbs as it builds tension toward refined tannins. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030.”

Groth 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Reserve’, Oakville
96 Points – ~ Antonio Galloni, Vinous, February 2021
“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is sourced from choice blocks on the Groth family’s Oakville property. A gorgeous, classically built wine, the Reserve is just fabulous today. Bright and lifted, with striking aromatic intensity. Dark red-toned fruit and purplish berry, cedar, lavender, rose petal, mint, spice and mocha lend considerable energy as the 2018 gradually opens in the glass. I would be in no rush here.”

About Groth

In May 2022, Groth celebrated their 40th anniversary. Incredibly, they are one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the region. A legacy that goes back to founders Dennis and Judy Groth. Dennis began his career as an accountant, becoming the CFO of Atari in 1978 (remember PONG!). In 1981, he and his wife Judy, purchased a 121-acre vineyard parcel in Oakville, Napa Valley. A year later, a 2nd vineyard of 44 acres, was added in Yountville. In 1985, they moved their family to Oakville where they still live. Suzanne, their daughter, has taken over the reins from her father. After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history (Suzanne is an accomplished artist), she decided on a career in the wine business and cut her teeth with the Henry Wine Group, a Californian wine distributor, selling fine wine to restaurants and retailers in the San Francisco Bay area. In 2017, she became President and CEO while her father remains as Chairman of the Board.

In 2021, the Groth family welcomed a new winemaker on board, just the 4th in the history of the estate. Ted Henry, who studied fermentation science at UC Davis, has had stints as winemaker at Trinchero Family Estates, Jarvis Estate and recently at Clos du Val, all in the Napa Valley.

It is the ‘dirt’ that makes the difference. The vineyards have been mapped extensively to understand which parcels produce the best fruit. Indeed, from 1999 – 2003 most of the Cabernet vineyard parcels were replanted notably changing the direction of the vine rows, but also replanting the sites closest to the Napa River to Cabernet Sauvignon, where it grows best. This is the location for the Reserve vineyard blocks. Today, Ted Henry is focused on doing a deep dive block by block, digging soil pits and taking Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) photos to measure vigor. In 2021, he was able to pick the grapes based on these measurements, identifying 14 different zones within the blocks.

Oakville is a breathtakingly beautiful place set among centuries-old oak trees and a patchwork of meticulously planted vineyards. With a shared vision amongst their esteemed neighbours, the Groth family has helped Oakville become recognised as one of the world’s preeminent wine regions. Groth has always been a leader in crafting expressive, lower-alcohol style Sauvignon Blanc and ‘non-Malo’ Chardonnay, with greater expression of fruit, using whole-cluster pressing and less aggressive oak treatment. Always wines with structure requiring some bottle-age, the ‘anti-blockbuster’ Groth Cabernet Sauvignon is better than ever, showing all the balance, finesse, depth, and character of wines of great pedigree.
