Woodman Wines & Spirits presents a straight rye, straight up…
American whiskey. Though often synonymous with “corn whiskey,” “Kentucky,” and “bourbon,” there’s a new wave of quality American craft whiskey gaining attention and fans. At the forefront is American Rye Whiskey. Before bourbon, with its corn base, the grain used in most of the first pioneering American whiskeys was rye.
The reason for the shift to corn was both economical and practical: corn was (and is) more plentiful (and therefore cheaper) than rye, and rye is a more difficult grain to work with in that it tends to be sticky/gummy and generally difficult to brew (whiskey starts life as, essentially, a beer). However, rye has a character all its own. Consumers have caught on to this, and distillers have responded in kind, leading to something of a rye-volution both in the US and here in Canada.
Located in the small Iowa town of Templeton and opened in 2018, Templeton Distillery is today one of the largest family-owned distilleries in the United States, and one that is leading the charge in the proud return of American rye whiskey. Available for a limited time at the LCBO we are excited to have the debut of Templeton 6 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey.
Templeton 6 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey
Distilled from a mash of 95 per cent rye and five per cent malted barley, this award-winning whiskey is then aged for a full six years in charred American oak barrels for added assertiveness and complexity.
Intense aromas of butterscotch, vanilla, dark cherry, and a hint of spring flowers, are underpinned with classic rye spiciness. Mellow, vibrant, and spicy in the mouth, with nuances of caramel and dark berries that fade slowly on the finish. Enjoy neat, over ice, or in a classic whiskey cocktail, where the unique character of Templeton 6 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey adds vibrancy and depth of flavour. Quantities are limited.
$54.90; LCBO #10673; 45.75% alc./vol., 750mL
