From growing up in the Tuscan countryside to receiving a vineyard as payment for The Last Supper, Leonardo’s life was intertwined with wine. The genius even sent his grower a letter outlining techniques he had learned in his travels that he wished to be employed in his vineyard in Fiesole. He pushed for closed vessels during fermentation to capture aroma and flavour lost to the traditional open-top fermentations of the time (1515). The modern winery has looked back over their relics and created the ‘Metodo Leonardo’, a method of making wine drawn from Leonardo’s studies on enology, to obtain, in the words of the master, the most “Devine grape liquor”.
Leonardo Chianti Riserva – #19698 – $17.00
From the hills of Vinci and the surrounding towns comes this traditional blend of Sangiovese and small amounts of other local reds. Ripe cherry and currants mix with subtle clove, oak spices, and herbs. Delivered with silky tannins and great overall balance, this makes a perfect pairing for roasted or grilled red meats (BBQ wine!), pastas in red sauce, and aged cheeses.
Leonardo Chianti ‘Fiasco’ – #372391 – $14.05 (Was $16.05, Save $2.00 until March 27th)
The quintessential Italian red wine in the classic Italian bottle. Sangiovese and a splash of other local reds creates this lightly coloured, juicy wine. A pungent nose of red berries, clove and violet is followed by flavours of tart cherry, strawberry, earth, and spice. The fiasco bottle, with its rounded bottom, was easier for traditional glass blowers to make, and the addition of a straw basket made it table-ready – think of Lady and the Tramp, red and white table cloths, and candle wax. Match this with your favorite Italian fare from pizza to lasagna to eggplant parmageana for una bella notte!
