Two agricultural products reign supreme in San Marzano, Italy. First is the San Marzano tomato, arguably the world’s finest sauce making tomato. Second comes the grape, more importantly, the Primitivo and Negroamaro grapes, flagships of the region’s wine culture. It was here that 19 growers joined together to create Cantine San Marzano, a co-op their families could be proud of. Through the decades, this cooperative has grown using modern techniques to produce elegant wines, but without forgetting their obligation to the old Apulian wine traditions.
San Marzano Primitivo – #13494 – $8.45
A Primitivo of deep ruby red colour and violet reflections. You’ll find a complex bouquet with plum and cherry notes, then dark fruit, date, spice, mocha, and vanilla on the palate. It is a robust wine that retains balance and a smooth delivery, making it dangerously easy to drink at this price. Match it up to American barbeque and smokehouse fare, pastas or pizza, or semi-hard cheeses.
San Marzano Negroamaro – #19697 – $8.45
Opening with generous flavours of black currant and black plum, wild berries, spices, and a hint of thyme. This is a soft and balanced Negroamaro (Italian, meaning “Black” and “Bitter”) that lingers through a lengthy finish, perfect for antipasti like salami and mature cheeses, as well as stews, roast lamb, and braised red meats.
