Chalk, Slate, Gravel presents the wines of Uva Mira, Stellenbosch online at the LCBO…
From Jancis Robinson:
“Winemaker Christian Coetzee tells me that the Uva Mira property is unique in terms of temperature – it falls into category 2 on the Winkler scale which is cool climate, unusual for Stellenbosch, more like Elgin. They pick on average 14 days later than Stellenbosch. Soils are mostly decomposed granite. They do intensive canopy management to avoid methoxypyrazines. They age in 60% new oak and 300-litre barrels to reduce oak to wine ratio, with some 225-litre barrels for structure in mid palate.”
The Mira Chardonnay 2017 $50.05 #876839 GOLD IWSC 2019
COLOUR: Green straw. NOSE: A lively combination of aromas on the nose featuring fresh lemon and lime with scented white flowers, subtle marzipan and shavings of orange zest, all underpinned by flinty minerality. PALATE: Superbly elegant in style with layers of zesty lime confit, some green melon, pistachio and an enticing seashell minerality that flows from the nose to the palate. The fine structure is complemented by remarkably refreshing acidity and a rich creamy texture. The finish is long, precise and very mineral.
The Mira Merlot 2015 $50.10 #876847 SILVER IWSC 2018
COLOUR: Violet red. NOSE: The nose is all creamy with delicate strawberry, fresh cassis and underlying nuances of lavender and cedar wood. PALATE: Rich and lush in the mouth with generous flavours of exotic dark berries contrasting with fresh herbal notes and a hint of light spice. Elegant and refined with silky smooth tannins that envelop the palate. The finish is long and intense with deep red cherry and a lovely savoury character.
The Mira Shiraz 2016 $57.60 #876987 BRONZE IWSC 2018
COLOUR: Purple red. NOSE: Beautifully perfumed and umami nose with deep purple violets, black berries, fynbos and a twist of black peppercorn spice. PALATE: Generous yet elegant, with leathery tannins and warm spice. The palate is layered with rich, intense and plush flavours of dark berries with fresh herbal notes – the quintessence of the variety.
The Mira Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 $51.55 #876888 SILVER IWSC 2018
16.5 Jancis Robinson: “Redcurrant and lavender scented. Heady perfume. Added acidity? It seems to be a little obvious and unintegrated but the fruit glows, polished to a sheen, clad in perfectly ripe tannins. A fine line of dried-herb greenness, as if the Cabernet Sauvignon character is trying to creep through, but it’s quickly drenched in all this luscious fruit. (TC) Drink 2019 – 2024”
