Rogers & Co. offers a range of wines made by California legend Paul Hobbs.

It would be difficult to have a conversation about fine wine without bringing up Paul Hobbs. This is the man that Forbes called “The Steve Jobs of Wine”. Robert Parker Jr. twice named him “Wine Personality of the Year”. As a boutique agency representing some of the world’s most interesting wineries, we’re thrilled to announce that the wines of Paul Hobbs are now part of the portfolio at Rogers & Company.

Years of hard work and Paul’s uncanny ability to recognize and express terroir have resulted in some of Napa Valley’s most highly acclaimed and collectable wines: his Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir are truly exciting.

To say that Paul is detail-oriented would be a considerable understatement. (Remember that Steve Jobs reference?) His exacting vineyard practices and site selection combine with a minimal-intervention approach in the cellar to produce expressive wines that sing. Hobbs ferments on indigenous yeasts and bottles his wines unfined and unfiltered, adding minimal sulfur. Nothing gets in the way of stellar fruit.

How did he get here? Paul’s career really took off as winemaker at Opus One, followed by a period consulting for acclaimed producers such as Peter Michael, Fisher, Lewis, and Catena. Paul Hobbs Winery was founded in 1991, followed by Viña Cobos, a groundbreaking Argentinean project, in 1999.

His next winery, CrossBarn, began as one small lot of Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2000 vintage. That small lot’s popularity inspired the introduction of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. With CrossBarn, Paul holds to his ideals, sourcing sustainably-grown fruit from top vineyards and employing the same gentle, minimal-intervention technique in the cellar. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir come from the cool reaches of the Russian River Valley and the wild Sonoma Coast, while the rich CrossBarn Cabernet is pure Napa Valley.

We’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of these wines in October 2017, and are taking orders now. Our allocations of the single vineyard wines (seriously collectable show-stoppers) are limited, and will be snapped up quickly.

If you’re new to Rogers & Company: Welcome! Wines are sold in unmixed cases of 12, 6, or 3, depending on the item. CrossBarn Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2016
$37.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Produced using hand-harvested fruit from the Sonoma Coast appellation, CrossBarn Chardonnay balances structure and weight in balance with pure, concentrated fruit. Bunches were whole-cluster pressed, and juice was fermented by native yeast, 90% in stainless steel, 10% in oak. Following five months maturation sur lie with weekly bâtonnage, the wine was bottled unfined, with minimal sulfur added.

“Linear and lean with wonderful freshness and crispness. Lots of lemon rind and citrus character with hints of stone and mango. Medium body, crisp and delicious. Minerality, sea salt undertone. Even gunpowder. Serious white for the money.” – 93 points, JamesSuckling.com, May 2017

CrossBarn Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2014
$52.95 per bottle, cases of 12

This is a smart, alluring Pinot that highlights the unique terroir of the Sonoma Coast. This is one of California’s wild places, where vineyards lie on fog-washed hillsides open to salty ocean breezes. Fruit was fermented in stainless steel by native yeast, largely de-stemmed berries with some whole bunches. Following ten months maturation sur lie in oak (11% new), the wine was bottled unfined, with minimal sulfur added.

“The Crossbarn 2014 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is another knockout winner. A Sonoma Coast cuvée of just over 11,000 cases, the wine (made from Dijon clones 777 and 115 and the Calera selection) exhibits some smoky barbecue notes, baking spice, loads of blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, medium to full body, and plenty of spice, but the purity of fruit and lusciousness are head-turners, especially at this price point.” – (90-92) points, Robert Parker, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, March 2016

CrossBarn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
$74.95 per bottle, cases of 12

If you like rich and full-bodied Cabernets, this is for you! In a string of excellent vintages, 2014 was the third straight outstanding season in a row. Dry winter and spring conditions limited canopy vigour, and a warm growing season without disruptive heat spikes resulted in steady, even ripening through to harvest. The resulting wines possess great site specificity and depth.

Paul Hobbs Winery Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2015
$74.95 per bottle, cases of 6

This is a quintessential Russian River Valley Chardonnay.

“The 2015 Chardonnay explodes on the nose and palate with sheer power, delivering full-throttle tropical fruit and allspice flavours with a touch of buttered toast. The full-bodied palate has a lovely savoury edge that offsets the fruit beautifully, with just enough freshness and a very long finish.”- (91-92) points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Feb 2017

Paul Hobbs Winery “Ellen Lane Estate” Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2014
$128.95 per bottle, cases of 6

The hillside Ellen Lane estate, located in the Russian River Valley sub-appellation of Green Valley, highlights the high-toned, precise beauty of cool-climate Chardonnay. The soil here is threaded with veins of well-drained gravel and clay loam, and the vineyard’s Western exposure captures the afternoon sun.

“Leading with beautiful floral notes of orange blossoms and honeysuckle, the 2014 Chardonnay Ellen Lane Estate offers a core of baked peaches, apple pie and marzipan. Full-bodied, buxom and seductively creamy in the mouth, it offers layer upon layer of perfumed stone fruit and mineral flavours, with incredible length. 2017-2024.” – 96 points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Feb 2017

Paul Hobbs Winery “Richard Dinner Vineyard” Sonoma Mountain Chardonnay 2014
$123.95 per bottle, cases of 6

The Richard Dinner vineyard has been sourced by Paul Hobbs since the winery’s inaugural 1991 vintage. The Sonoma Mountain AVA, located near Glen Ellen, is best known for Cabernet and Zinfandel, but the numerous crags and folds of the terrain provide many different environments. The days are long and bright, moderately warm, and the soil is volcanic – rich with minerals. Regardless of varietal, wines grown here are intense and age-worthy.

“Wow – I just love the intense nose of grapefruit essence and mandarin peels on 2014 Chardonnay Richard Dinner Vineyard with underlying yuzu, baker’s yeast and toasted almond hints. Full-bodied and voluptuously fruited in the mouth, it explodes with citrus intensity, plus it has a seamless backbone of acidity to inject vitality and wonderful length. Just gorgeous.” — 96 points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Feb 2017

Paul Hobbs Winery Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2014
$89.95 per bottle, cases of 6

Hand-harvested fruit from the appellation’s best vineyards, picked at night when a chill hangs in the air, was hand-sorted while still cool from the field. Following a five-day cold soak, the wine was fermented with a small quantity of whole bunches in open-top stainless steel tanks by indigenous yeast. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation occurred after the wine was racked to barrels. The wine spent 11 months total in French oak (44% new) before it was bottled, unfined and unfiltered.

“Lots of plum and blueberry character with hints of wet earth. Black tea notes. Full body, rich and flavourful. So much going on here. Pretty now but better in 2019.”– 93 points, JamesSuckling.com, May 2017

Paul Hobbs Winery “Hyde Vineyard” Carneros Pinot Noir 2014
$128.95 per bottle, cases of 6

Larry Hyde’s fruit is among the most coveted in California. Planting began in 1979, and today the vineyards cover 200 acres of dense clay-loam soil in Carneros’ rolling hills, which offer a diverse array of microclimates. Here, at the southernmost tip of Napa Valley, the climate is influenced by the cool air and fog that breezes in from San Pablo Bay. Since Paul Hobb’s inaugural 1991 vintage, the winery has sourced Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyard. The yield was cropped for Hobbs at only 2.4 tons per acre in 2014 – needless to say, there’s not much to go around.

“This wine exhibits crisp acidity, notes of raspberry, cherry, forest floor, and dusty, loamy soil notes. It is elegant, medium to full-bodied, and just another beauty from Paul Hobbs to drink over the next 5-10 years. 2016-2026.” – 93 points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, March 2016

Paul Hobbs Winery Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
$129.95 per bottle, cases of 6

In every way, 2013 was a phenomenal growing season. A warm, dry spring led to early bud break, limited canopy vigour and berry size, and created ideal growing conditions through to harvest. The resulting wines show striking balance and expression.

“Hobbs has hit the bull’s-eye with his selection of 2013 Cabernet Sauvignons. There are 5,800+ cases of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, which has some Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot in the blend. About 40% of this comes from their estate vineyard in Coombsville. This is just beautiful, an earthy, graphite-laden, crème de cassis-scented wine with plenty of depth, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long, opulent finish. This wine hasn’t been priced yet, but this is a beauty, and really over-delivers for a generic Napa cuvée. Drink it over the next 10+ years.” – 93 points, Robert Parker, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, March 2016

Paul Hobbs Winery “Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
$409.95 per bottle, cases of 3

Dr. George Belden Crane, one of the mavericks behind Napa Valley’s wine industry, planted this vineyard in Saint Helena in 1858. Generations later, in 1997, Beckstoffer Vineyards took ownership. In 1998, the site’s gravelly loam soils were replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. One of the warmer sections of the valley, further inland from the cooling influence of San Pablo Bay, vineyards here are moderated by afternoon breezes that flow through a gap in the Mayacamas Mountains to the north.

“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane is my favorite again of this grouping and has the potential to be a perfect wine, which is really hitting the bull’s-eye in 2014. Plenty of gravelly notes, blueberry, blackberry and mulberry jump from the glass of this inky bluish purple-colored 2014 Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.”- (98-100) points, Robert Parker, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, March 2016

Paul Hobbs Winery “Nathan Coombs Estate” Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
$409.95 per bottle, cases of 3

The Nathan Coombs Estate spans over 60 acres in southern Napa Valley’s Coombsville AVA. This is the coolest of Napa’s subregions. The terrain is gently sloping and well-drained, with veins of loam running through the soil. Bordeaux varietals rooted here enjoy a long growing season that delivers wines with intense black fruit flavours and an elegant mineral-driven mouthfeel. Named for Nathan Coombs (1840’s frontier pioneer, survivor of Grizzly bear attacks, founder of the town of Coombsville – later named Napa), this is Paul Hobbs Winery’s first-ever Napa Valley estate, and this is a consistently high-calibre wine.

“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Nathan Coombs Estate is super-dense, displaying sweet crème de cassis, Christmas fruitcake and spice box notes as well as a long, opulent mouthfeel, crushed rock and lead pencil shavings, and a round, generous, sumptuous mouthfeel. It is a killer effort and a great example of Coombsville viticulture. Drink it over the next 15-20 years. Kudos to Paul Hobbs!” – (96-99) points, Robert Parker, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, March 2016
