Infamous Dundas West Sports Bar The Dock Ellis (1280 Dundas West, at Dovercourt) has some terrific $6 lunchtime specials on every weekday throughout the summer. I happened to be passing the other day and glanced at the chalkboard boasting of a Chicken Souvlaki for six bones. Being somewhat peckish (and thirsty for Beau’s Lugtread) I simply couldn’t resist.
Despite the ongoing Euro brawling football being broadcast over the many screens in there, I was surprisingly the only customer at 1pm on a Wednesday afternoon. Nevertheless the always-welcoming staff made me feel right at home, and heartily encouraged me to try out their daily special.
I was most impressed when it arrived. As you can see from the picture above, that’s a lot of food for $6, and it was extremely well-executed: A soft warmed pita, layered with fresh iceberg lettuce, seriously juicy garlic-marinated chicken, crispy fries, crumbled feta, parsley, and a little squeeze of lemon. Perfect. Add a pint of Beau’s and a tip and you are in and out for $17. I don’t think that one could find that kind of value anywhere else in the city?
They have different $6 specials each weekday, from a fried chicken sandwich on Mondays through a black bean and tofu burger every Thursday, to fish and chips on Friday. I’d give them a ring to find out what they are running, just in case you were after something special.
