Nicholas Pearce offers a new array of wines from a dynamic Piedmontese producer, Réva.
After being paired up with winemaker Gianluca Colombo by Jamie Drummond (see here) and Christopher Sealy upon their last visit to Italy, I finally got to spend some time with him in Verona this April. His wine from Réva are one of the best packages I’ve stumbled upon in ages. The wines, the team and philosophy are all “our style” and definitely an asset to any acclaimed wine program or cellar collection.
The Line Up
- Réva Sauvignon Langhe DOC 2015 $26.95
- Réva Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2014 $23.95
- Réva Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore 2013 $29.95
- Réva Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC 2012 $33.95
- Réva Barolo DOCG 2012 $59.95
- Réva Barolo “Revera” DOCG 2012 $84.95
My opinion aside, their “2012 Barolo Revera” won the grand prize at the Vinitaly 5 Star Wine Comp claiming Highest scoring International Red and also the Highest scoring Italian wine overall. (Some of our best local somms attended as judges). Click here to see the official roster.
Philosophy
“We produce typical variety of our territory, an ancient Piedmontese grape variety recently rediscovered and Sauvignon, vine that we love. The vineyards management is organic, certified, we use different techniques biodynamic because we believe that to respect nature is respecting also our self. We do not use herbicides or chemical fertilization, because we, in first persons, stay in the vineyards everyday.”
In the Winery with the man, Gianluca Colombo
The winery’s roots go back to 1867. In 2010 the winery underwent a thorough reconstruction and the acclaimed Gianluca Colombo became head oenologist. He plans to expand the vineyards and plant well-known varieties such as Sauvignon. Despite his youth,Gianluca has a great deal of experience, not just from our winery but mainly from his work as part of the team of the celebrated Italian oenologist, Franco Cordero. He works as a consultant to many famous wineries in the Barola district and he is proud of his small but high-quality wineries. In 2014 Gianluca’s efforts were crowned by obtaining the PremioGambelli – a prestigious winemaker’s award for winemakers under 35.
