In this Saturday’s VINTAGES release, LCBO is bringing back a perennial favourite of ours, and for many across Ontario… the 2014 Loimer Grüner Veltliner Langenlois from the Kamptal region. A certified organic and biodynamically farmed, dry white from Austria, the hand harvested grapes for this wine come from old vineyards in the Kamptal, an area north west of Vienna known for this aromatic grape. The wines from the 2014 vintage are very exciting; look for refreshingly crispy, crunchy and classic Grüner notes of green apple, stone fruit and minerals.
Although Austria grows many other varietals with distinct purity and expression, Grüner Veltliner is most certainly Austria’s signature white grape, offering this country a unique identity in a sea of varietal similitude. Critics like Anne Krebiehl, MW from Wine Enthusiast and John Szabo, MS from WineAlign.com seem to agree this is a textbook example of the varietal, each awarding it a solid 91 points. Kim Markus from the Wine Spectator seemed to love the wine and awarded it 92 points!
These are great scores for a $22 wine! See below for their reviews.
LCBO purchased just under 200 cases of this wine… so grab some while you can… with these kinds of reviews, it won’t be around for long. Enjoy!

Notes and Reviews…
Loimer Grüner Veltliner Langenlois 2014
“Rich and minerally-tasting, with an intense purity to the gooseberry, white plum and raspberry flavors. Snappy acidity and plenty of savory notes flood the finish. Drink now through 2020.” Score: 92 (Kim Marcus, winespectator.com, Dec.15, 2015)
“Bright, clean, open and complex, this is a fine and energetic grüner from biodynamic producer Fred Loimer. I love the mid-palate richness framed by sharp acids, and the layers of citrus, white-fleshed orchard fruit and honeyed-waxy, earthy, root vegetable flavours. Very good to excellent length. Lovely wine, nicely priced. Tasted March 2016. Value Rating: ***” Score: 91 (John Szabo, MS, WineAlgin.com, Mar 30, 2016)
“Yeast, lovage and yellow pear unite in an ultrasavory Grüner that honors the variety’s nickname of pfefferl—the peppery one. The flavor base rests on green pear and fresh lemon, but the spice ratchets everything up a notch, and the lovely pepper lingers. Incredibly appetizing, this wine calls for light, savory dishes.” Score: 91 (Anne Krebiehl, MW, Wine Enthusiast, Jul 1, 2015)
