Although Austria has perhaps been a little slower than some countries to develop a cabal of natural wine producers, there are certainly quite a few of them out there now, as was evident at Vienna’s RAW fair in June of this year.
At this year’s Vivinum conference we spoke to Natural Winemaker Maria Muster who, along with her husband Sepp, concentrates upon producing some utterly fascinating Sauvignon Blanc and Morillon (the Styrian synonym for Chardonnay) on the Opok soils (limestone/clay silt) specific to their region.
The wines of Weingut Muster are well worth seeking out, as they contain within them a particular nervous vitality that is truly a rare thing to find in a glass of wine these days.
