On Tuesday the 15th of May a plethora of Ontario winelovers descended upon Toronto’s Metropolitan Hotel for a chance to discover The New Wines of Greece. Many of the shining stars of the Greek wine world were present to pour their vinous treats.

John Szabo MS expertly facilitated a well-attended educational session with a panel that included Igor Ryjenkov MW, Evan Saviolidis of Wine Tidings magazine, and Oenologist Sofia Perpera.

The response to the wines on show was overwhelmingly positive, with many of us Sommeliers left scratching our heads as to why we don’t see more Greek wines in the Ontario market. The finer wines of Greece have been on the hitlists of the city’s most groundbreaking Sommeliers for some years now, but the wines have yet to gain a sizeable momentum through Ontario’s Liqueur Control Board. There are some great wines available, one just needs to seek them out, keeping a close eye upon Vintage’s offerings and scouring winelists for Ionian bottlings.
