A few years ago Laura Reinsborough was volunteering at the newly opened Wychwood Barns Farmers Market, when Spadina House Museum contacted The Stop Community Food Centre, which runs the market, about their apple orchard. The museum could take care of the trees, but had nothing to do with the apples and wondered if the market could use them. Reinsborough jumped at the opportunity and started bringing the heritage fruit to the market and that was the beginning of Not Far From The Tree, the innovative not-for-profit organization that Reinborough founded and serves as Executive Director. I sat down with her in a downtown Toronto park, near an apple tree, to talk to her about how Not Far From The Tree harvests fruit across the city of Toronto for the benefit of tree owners, volunteers and social agencies, like The Stop, that feed people, for the video below.
