Located in heart of the Sancerre region in the Loire Valley, is Domaine Vincent Delaporte and Sons, a family business which has been passed from father to son since the 17th century. Today the domaine is run by Jean-Yves Delaporte (Vincent’s son).
The Delaporte property is comprised of 34 different parcels of vineyard totaling 24 hectares. About 75 percent is dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc and the remainder to Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir vines which range in age from twenty-one to forty years. Seventy per cent of these vines are planted in clay and sandy-flint soil. The remaining 30 per cent of the vines are planted in limestone soil.
The grapes are 100 per cent hand-picked and are aged in 228-litre French oak barrels for 50 per cent of the harvest and in stainless-steel vats for the other half. The wine is bottled after six months of ageing without filtration.
2015 Delaporte Sancerre Rouge – $29.99 – 91 Points, Decanter
Aromas of very ripe red fruits and well- integrated, with odours of cooked red fruits and roasted coffee beans. Very round and smooth with tight tannins on the palate.
